On the 8th and 9th of September Krasnodar LGBT social movement «Revers» hosted The Workshop of «The Gender Journey» project for psychologists, psychotherapists and students. The specialists from Krasnodar and Rostov-On-Don took part in it.
The Workshop took place in the framework of development of working with assisting specialists. We invite psychologists and psychotherapists for cooperation, who do support groups, individual consultations and educational activities. By recognition of specialists themselves, the education they got is not enough for understanding such important questions as gender, gender variety and sexuality. For our part, we strive to fill this gap by organizing training events, inviting experts.
The Workshop was led by Irina Karagapolova, psychiatrist, sexual health specialist, specialist of development of assistance to transgender people, the teacher of interdisciplinary department of sexology of RSSS (Russian Scientific Sexological Society).
The work was started with an original individual task, which essence was in everyone’s self-presentation with author’s poster’s use and gathering the expectations about the Workshop.
Next group training was aimed at a starting evaluation of the knowledge level about «The Gender Identities Variety» – the task was about to define a number of themed concepts. The most part of members reported on that they didn’t even run into proposed concepts before.
To fill this gap of knowledge, the training was followed by the presentation with main concepts connected to the topic, using the Glossary of Standards of Care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender-Nonconforming People, Version 7.
The day was ended with the practicing session dedicated to the difficulties transgender people living in Russia have to face in their families, on academics, at work, with therapists. The discussion was about the need in psychologists transgender, transsexual and gender-nonconforming people have and the need from psychologist’s assistance.
The second day started with presentation dedicated to «Current approaches to assistance for transgender, transsexual and gender-nonconforming people». It shed light on history of knowledge development to help trans*people in the country and around the world, modern positions about assistance, calls for mental health specialists.
The next topic of our Workshop was «Sexual orientations. Diversity». With help of interactive session and following presentation The members got acquainted with the main calls about self-identification of people with different variations of sexual orientations, was discussed questions about overcoming ignorance and homophobia in professional environment.
Another step was the acquaintance with «Intersex-variety. Intersex-people. The experience of living».
After concluding of the main part of Workshop was the circle of feedback during which the members shared about what happened to them in the process of inner work by professional and personal changes.
